Navigating the Complexity of Abortion Policy

As a single woman in my twenties, I faced an unplanned pregnancy. This experience gave me profound
insight into the complex and emotional decisions women encounter when unexpectedly pregnant and
unprepared for motherhood. Guided by my personal beliefs and faith, I chose to embrace life. Today, my son
is 23 years old and has recently graduated from Marquette University. My unwavering commitment to
providing him with the best possible life became the catalyst that inspired me to transform my own.

Without resources like WIC, BadgerCare, and the Wisconsin Shares child care subsidy, I wouldn’t have been
able to pursue my education in nursing while also working to support my son. These programs provided the
opportunity to improve both our lives and trajectories.

Abortion is one of the most divisive issues in American politics, causing a deep rift between pro-life and pro-
choice advocates. Despite attempts by the media and politicians to simplify the matter, the complexity of
abortion defies easy categorization. In my view, the decision regarding abortion should ultimately rest with
the people of Wisconsin. To ensure their voices are duly heard, I support Senator Ron Johnson’s suggestion
to submit this issue to the voters. While Wisconsin’s voters cannot directly change the law through a
statewide referendum, an advisory referendum initiated by the legislature would offer lawmakers a clearer
gauge of public opinion.

Crafting a universally acceptable abortion policy is impossible. The issue carries immense weight due to the
gravity of ending a life. Simultaneously, we must never regress to an era of dangerous back-alley abortion
procedures. By maintaining access to regulated procedures, including limiting abortions beyond 12 weeks to
specific circumstances, we can prioritize women’s safety while acknowledging the issue’s complexity.
